The State of Wisconsin now requires that all one or two family building permit applications be filled out online. Complete guidelines and application materials can be found using the link below. No permits will be issued until the online application has been completed.

Required Town of Algoma Permits

Sanitary Permit

Issued by Algoma Sanitary District #1 (if property is in sanitary district) or Winnebago County Zoning Department (if property is not in sanitary district). A sanitary permit is required prior to any work being done on a sewer lateral. This includes the original installation of a lateral and any time a sewer lateral is disconnected. If a sanitary permit is needed, it is required to be issued prior to the issuance of any other permits.

Building Permit

Issued by Town of Algoma Building Inspection Department. A building permit is required for the construction of any structure or anytime more than $1,000.00 in work is going to be done to an existing building or any work that will affect the type of occupancy, area of structure, structural strength, natural light requirements or exits from a building. Zoning Permits for fences, pool, decks and storage sheds are issued by Winnebago County Zoning Department. If a sanitary permit is required, it needs to be obtained prior to this permit being issued

Electrical Permit

Issued by Town of Algoma Building Inspection Department. A electrical permit is required to perform any electrical work. The only exception is the replacement of existing fixtures with the same type of fixture.

Plumbing Permit

Issued by Town of Algoma Building Inspection Department. If a sanitary permit is required it must be obtained prior to the issuance of this permit. A plumbing permit is required any time work is done to the plumbing system. This includes the water distribution and drain & vent pipes. The only exception is for the replacement of plumbing fixtures that does not involve the relocation of water, drain or vent pipes. Note: Replacing a water heater does not require a permit.

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Permit

Issued by Town of Algoma Building Inspection Department as part of the Building Permit. A permit is not required for replacement systems.

Winnebago County Zoning Permit

Issued by Winnebago County Zoning Department. A zoning permit is required prior to constructing, reconstructing, enlarging, extending, converting or moving a structure. This includes accessory buildings, decks, pools, fences and signs. Interior alterations do not require a zoning permit, unless it will affect the structure. The zoning permit will be issued by Winnebago County Planning and Zoning Department.

Demolition Permit

Issued by Town of Algoma Building Inspection Department. A demolition permit is required prior to demolishing any structure.

Occupancy Permit

An Occupancy Permit is required prior to moving into or living in any structure. Failure to possess a signed occupancy permit prior to moving in will result in the loss of the Occupancy Permit fee. The permit is issued by the Town’s Building Inspector only after the inspection has been completed and there have been no noted health or safety violations

Moving Permit

A Moving Permit is issued by Town of Algoma Building Inspection Department. The permit is required prior to moving any building within, into, or through the town.

Driveway/Culvert and Work within Right-Of-Way Permit

A culvert is required prior to constructing a new driveway. Town Staff will determine the size and length necessary. The owner is responsible for purchasing the culvert and end walls and having them properly set. All work done within the right-of-way requires a permit. This is to ensure that there is proper drainage.

Do I Need a Permit?

Town Permits Required:

  • Solar energy systems
  • Home additions
  • Home remodels, including basements and attics
  • Decks
  • Accessory buildings
  • Plumbing, HVAC (new or replacement), electrical, and generators
  • *Culverts and Asphalt Aprons
  • Minor projects valued at $1,000 or more
  • Replacement doors and windows

Town Projects not Requiring Permits:

  • Roofing repair or replacement
  • Wind energy systems

The Town of Algoma is under Winnebago County Zoning. County staff issue a variety of permits under their jurisdiction, including new fences, stormwater and erosion control, shoreland building or improvements, septic systems, and pools.

Dog Licensing

Pursuant to Sec. 95.21(2) Wisconsin Statutes, a rabies vaccination is required for all dogs 5 months of age and revaccinated within one year after the initial vaccination. Thereafter, the owner shall have the dog revaccinated before the date that the immunization expires as stated on the certificate of vaccination.

Pursuant to Sec. 174.05(1) The owner of a dog 5 months of age on January 1 of any year, or 5 months of age within the license year, shall annually pay a dog license tax and obtain a license.

In order to license your dog(s): Present a current vaccination certificate for each dog in your household.   A maximum limit of 3 dogs per household in areas zoned R-1, R-2, R-3, R-4, & R-5 except that a litter may be kept for not exceeding ten (10) weeks from birth.  Per ordinance 159 a conditional use permit from Winnebago County would be required for over 3 dogs per household.

Spayed Females: $10.00

Un-neutered Males: $15.00

Un-spayed Females: $15.00

Late Fee of $5.00 due if license not obtained prior to April 1st.

2023-2024 Planning Commission Application Schedule

All relevant application materials for certified survey maps, conditional use permits, site plans, and the rezoning of land are due by the stated deadlines. This includes information provided to and received from the Winnebago County Planning and Zoning Department. For any applications that involve land use changes within the Joint Town/City Extraterritorial Zoning Area, the application packet must include any relevant information provided to and received from the City of Oshkosh’s Planning Services Division.

A site plan shall be submitted prior to an application for a building permit. For conditional use permits under the Winnebago County Zoning Ordinance, a site plan shall be submitted and reviewed by the Town’s Planning Commission and Town Board prior to the public hearing facilitated by the County’s Planning and Zoning Committee. Town of Algoma approvals or denials, or any conditions the Town puts on the conditional use permit will be added to the County’s conditional use packet and part of the permit decision-making process (in non-shoreland areas).

Required Information, A site plan will contain the following:

  • Location Map, which must be legible to identify the location within the town
  • Names of adjacent or surrounding streets
  • A survey of the property, drawn to scale of sufficient size to show boundaries (lot lines) of the parcel, including dimensions
  • Location and dimensions of structures and yards
  • The location and dimensions of all parking/loading areas/ driveways/intersections
  • Internal traffic patterns, lighting patterns, landscaping patterns, internal signage
  • Location of public and private easements
  • Location of public and private utilities
  • Other relevant information to show compliance with Town of Algoma Municipal Code and Winnebago County Zoning Ordinance
